Artemis meets other cultures

Artemis Danza has always engaged in contacts and relations with the world of dance and culture outside of Italy, in the rest of Europe and elsewhere: its tours have visited countries like France, Belgium, Switzerland, Colombia, Albania, etc. This necessity to look toward 'different' cultural and artistic horizons recently acquired concrete expression in the project Artemis encounters other cultures - realized in collaboration with Regione Emilia-Romagna - Assessorato alla Cultura and Cultura d'Europa and with Ministero per le Attività e i Beni Culturali - that consists of a period of residence of the Company in different countries of the world, as a time of study, comparison and exchange of artistic experiences between our group and the host country. It is a unique, privileged opportunity where art and humanity unite and get to know each other better, obtaining reciprocal stimuli and enrichment.

After the Latin American triennial, 2008 witnessed the opening of a fascinating new chapter of Artemis Meets Other Cultures which saw the Company head East, to explore new cultural and artistic territories, first in Turkey and then in India.

In 2009, Artemis will go even further East: in Autumn the Company will do a new residence in Japan, particularly in Tokyo, during which create a dense network of contacts and collaborations with local artists, choreographers and companies, developing the first choreographic research leading to the newly created in 2010 by Monica Casadei.

2008 - INDIA and TURKEY

In 2008 the project Artemis Meets Other Cultures was further enriched by two new stays in countries of major cultural and artistic interest, namely India and Turkey.

INDIA

In April 2008 the Company spent three weeks in India, where, as well as presenting spectacles from the repertoire, Monica Casadei and her dancers began some fascinating choreographic research. For this new residence the Company was invited by the CIPA-Chandigarh Institute of Performing Arts (one of the leading cultural institutions of Northern India), to participate in the Festival of Italian Dances in Chandigarh from the 10th to the 15th of April 2008, where they were the main attraction.

Their travels also took them to Southern India, from Chennai to Madurai, for an initial period of study and research, and then New Delhi where, in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Culture, the Company presented several shows.

The Shows
o Performance of I Bislacchi. Omaggio a Fellini and Bod-Y-Satt-va, as well as several other shows from the repertoire, at the Ashok Amphitheatre in New Delhi from the 4th to the 8th of April.
o Performance of Latino America. Trilogia over the four evenings of the Festival of Italian Dances in Chandigarh.
o  Performances in the courtyards and Indian temples of Madurai, Thanjavour, and Trichy.

Artistic residence
o Research into the Indian coreutic tradition through working with the prestigious Kalakshetra Academy in Chennai, the Bharatanatyam choreographer and dancer, P.T. Narendran and the CIPA from Chandigarh.
o Short films PIEDINUDI by Emanuele Sciannamea and the backstage of the trip called Colori in Movimento - Colori in Movimento produced by Mario Jorio.
o Photo-reporting by Beatrice Pavasini and Stefano Mazzotta.

New Creation
Monica Casadei's new 2008 creation arose out of a choreographic ‘challenge': to draw inspiration from the infinite patrimony of gestures and signs of traditional Indian Bharatanatyam dancing, in an attempt to come closer to the mystery of an age-old civilisation fast becoming one of the most important nations of the future. The show Codice India, the outcome of this research, will be premièred on the 4th of September 2008 at the Festival Oriente Occidente in Rovereto, which is also its co-producer, and will be presented at the Arena del Sole in Bologna (18th and 19th of November 2008) and in Parma as part of the Danza del III Millennio season (22nd of November 2008).

TURKEY

For the residence and tour in Turkey, Artemis was a guest (and the only Italian company present), at the X METU-International Contemporary Dance Festival, organised by the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, one of the leading events dedicated to dance in Turkey. As well as Ankara, the tour in Turkey took in the cities of Smirne and Istanbul and was produced in collaboration with the Italian Institutes of Culture in these cities.

The Shows
Opening of the Ankara Festival with the show, Latino America. Trilogia presented both at the Sabanci Kultur Merkezi theatre in Smirne and at the "Casa d'Italia" theatre in Istanbul.

Artistic residence
o Contemporary dance and Aikitaiso workshops held by Monica Casadei and the dancers from the Artemis Dance Company, as part of the METU Festival in Ankara.
o Photo-reporting by Stefano Mazzotta and a short film by Emanuele Sciannamea.

New Creation
The residence in Turkey was to lead to new choreographic research by Monica Casadei and a new creation to be premièred in the spring of 2009 at the Teatro Comunale di Modena, which will also be acting as co-producer.

2007 - MEXICO

The third stage of the project led to Mexico. In October of 2007, the Company members were artists in residence in Mérida, as guests of the Escuela Superior de Arte de Yucatàn, directed by Leonor Medina, and in Mexico City, at the Teatro Nacional de la Danza. The residence was possible thanks to collaboration with the Italian emigrates association Emiliano-Romagnoli nel Mondo, and the Italian Institute of Culture and Dante Alighieri Institute both in Mexico City.

The Shows
Performance of Brasil Pass at the Teatro Nacional de la Danza in Mexico City and some extracts from it in Mérida.

Artistic residence
o Contemporary dance workshop held by Monica Casadei and the Artemis dancers, for school pupils in Mérida and the corps de ballet of the National Contemporary Dance Company.
o Study at the Mayan archaeological sites in Uxmal, Tulum, and Chichen Itza: a search for materials, inspiration and images for the Company's new show, centred around the culture and rituals of the ancient pre-Colombian civilisations, given a re-working through the vision of Monica Casadei and her dancers.

Events
oPhoto-reporting by Stefano Mazzotta published in the book Mexica.Collapse (published by CasadeiLibri).
oShort film shot by Emanuele Sciannamea in Mexico, extracts from which became part of the Mexica.Collapse show

New Creation
The choreographic research in Mexico led to the production of Mexica.Collapse: in co-production with the Romaeuropa Foundation. After a preview at the G. Magnani municipal theatre in Fidenza, the show was premièred at the Palladium theatre in Rome on the 8th of February 2008, followed by performances in main squares around Italy (including Naples, Turin, and Bologna).

2006 - CUBA

In 2006 Artemis Danza organized another visit-tour, this time to Cuba, at ENA - Escuela Nacional de Arte de la Habana directed by Caridad Morales Alderete (Modern Dance and Folklore Section directed by Luisa Olivares Navarro) and at Centro de Teatro y Danza de La Habana directed by Isabel Bustos. 2005 - BRAZIL

In 2005 the Company took up residence at the new Centro Coreografico da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro directed by Regina Miranda, where Artemis was the first European Company to visit. The stay was preceded by a first exploratory trip by Monica Casadei who participated in the birth of the creation Brasil Pass that, on the Company's return to Italy, was inspired by this intense artistic experience. Many joint initiatives were undertaken with the Brazilian cultural world, and a number of collateral activities were carried out both in Brazil (in two separate visits) and in Italy:
