PINA BAUSCH

By Sonia Schoonejans

Between 1990 and 2000, the Flemish photographer Maarten Vanden Abeele followed the work of Pina Bausch, taking hundreds of photos. An exhibition was inspired by these photos and was originally set up at the Couvent des Cordeliers in Paris. The most significant images, chosen by Pina Bausch herself and by the exhibition curator Sonia Schoonejans, portray the apical moments of some of Bausch’s major works, including “Le Sacre du Printemps” and “Nelken”, offering the viewer the point of view of Pina herself on her work. As a historical and poetic document at the same time, the exhibition is a story in pictures of some of the most significant experiences of a decade where Bausch was the absolute protagonist of Europe’s art scene.

This project on the identity starts from the city landscape to compose a human mapping of the territory through the gesture, the face, the words, the dreams and the expectations of its inhabitants and the memories of its places. This interactive work unfolds among photographic castings, video shootings, multimedia installations and it embarks on a journey between reminiscence of the past and perception of the future.
